Popular Smartphone Apps for Truck Drivers

Have you ever thought about life without your smartphone? The thought of not having access to my favorite apps—Instagram and Google® Maps—to get me through the day leaves me feeling uneasy. Since 56% of American adults own smartphones today, it’s likely that many of you feel this way, too. If you have a job that requires you to be on the road, like a truck driver, a smartphone equipped with apps can make life easier.

Approximately 65% percent of truck drivers are smartphone users. In the past, it was nearly impossible to gauge traffic, weather, and fuel prices from the road, much less stay in touch with family, scan paperwork, or track your hours of service (HOS). Now, with apps, it’s easy to access nearly anything you need and want when you stop for food, fuel, or rest.

Here are 10 popular smartphone apps for truck drivers:

The Weather Channel®. Get real-time weather forecasts and alerts. Check the forecast in the areas you are driving to and make sound decisions to avoid severe weather.

Google® Maps. Access traffic information, get directions, and even see a loading dock in satellite view.

Skype®. Video chat with your family no matter where you are. This is a great way to see your loved ones, even if you are on the road for long periods of time.

Transflo®. Snap a photo of your delivery documents, immediately scan in your paperwork, and speed up document delivery for faster payment.

Fuelbook®. Make cost effective decisions before you fuel up. This fuel locator is updated throughout the day. Every penny you save on fuel adds up over time.

MyFitnessPal®. Track your nutritional intake and calories burned. Being healthy on the road can be a challenge, but this app makes it easy to monitor and record your workouts and eating habits.

CHRWTrucks®. Search loads, make check calls, post a truck, and manage your business from the road.

Fast Food Calorie Counter. Make the healthiest choices possible when deciding which fast food menu item to order.

Waze®. Share traffic updates with other drivers and get alerts for accidents, road hazards, or traffic jams impacting your route.

Mint®. Manage your finances by tracking, budgeting, and managing your money while on the go.

It is amazing how apps can simplify or improve life on the road—from eating to scanning paperwork. I would love to hear from other trucking companies and truck drivers about the apps that make your days easier. Please share your favorite smartphone apps for truck drivers in the comment section.

Grace -- Great list! There are some really helpful apps on there. Another one that I find really useful is the KeepTruckin free electronic logbook app. Gives drivers an easy to use alternative to paper logs. Totally free too.
