The Big Picture of Trucking in 2013

issues in trucking

Here we are again at the end of another year. Where does the time go? As I look back at 2013 in trucking, I think we can all agree on three major issues that continue to weigh on the minds of carriers, changes to hours of service (HOS); the driver shortage; and FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability program (CSA). Every time we chat with a motor carrier, pick up a trade publication, or read about the trucking industry on social media, at least one of these issues comes up. As I recap each of these issues, I encourage you to share comments on how these issues have directly impacted your business.

Truck Drivers and the Mobile Evolution

How do you communicate with your truck drivers? Years ago the only way to communicate with drivers would be to use a land line. Drivers would find loads on a truck stop load board, and then use a pay phone to call the shipper or broker. Once tendered, the driver would again need to stop and call for directions to the shipper, occasionally stopping to make daily check calls, and finally stopping to get directions to the receiver. All of these calls were time consuming and required taking notes. Don’t forget, in addition to the manual work required to communicate, drivers also needed to navigate via a paper map—no high-tech GPS was in sight.

Editor’s Note: Earlier this year, Bruce Johnson contributed a blog post for Transportfolio®. We’re sharing his original post here because professional truck drivers are important to the transportation industry. Please share your thoughts and read the blog post, Show your Appreciation for Truck Drivers.

Truck driver appreciation week is upon us once again, last year I wrote about my appreciation for America’s truck drivers. This year, I feel it is still just as important to declare my continued appreciation for the 3.5 million men and women who drive trucks. Take a look around at everything you see and use. The coffee mug you just took a sip from, the keyboard and mouse you used to get to this blog, even the clothes you’re wearing are all a result of a truck driver’s hard work. As the holiday season approaches, most of us don’t even think about being away from family and friends. For truck drivers, they’re often on the road, a thousand miles from home—even during the holidays. Talk to any driver and odds are they miss out on big events like anniversaries, birthdays, and weddings. Whether you work in the transportation industry or not, we should all be grateful for the hard work drivers do to keep America moving.
